movie musicals
I got a batch of DVDs in the mail today: 1776, Bye Bye Birdie, Victor/Victoria, and Cover Girl. While cataloging them, I noticed that they represent four different decades. Now I have a yen to have a movie marathon, with one musical from each decade from the 1930s to the present.

1930s: I don't know - Astaire and Rogers would be good. Turner Classic Movies is showing Roberta and Follow the Fleet next week, or I could get Top Hat, Swing Time, Shall We Dance, or The Barkleys of Broadway from Netflix. Suggestions, anyone? Sadly, Swing Time is the only Astaire-Rogers I think I've ever seen.

1940s: Cover Girl

1950s: I watched Summer Stock (Gene Kelly and Judy Garland) last night, so that could count, or I could watch Singin' in the Rain or Kiss Me Kate for the millionth time.

1960s: Bye Bye Birdie

1970s: 1776

1980s: Victor/Victoria

1990s: Slim pickings here - the only thing I can think of is Evita, which would at least be easy, since I have it already.

2000s: Choices, choices. I've watched Chicago and The Phantom of the Opera more recently than Moulin Rouge, though, so it's likely to be the latter.

Now I'm having to resist the urge to go reorganize my musicals on DVD by date instead of title. *sigh*

It's too bad you don't live closer - you'd be welcome. :)

Hey, I should get Viva Las Vegas, too; that would be sort of a neat double feature.

Swing Time is just about a perfect film. The "Never Gonna Dance" dance is THE best of them all, I think.

Top Hat is a good-un. The Barkelys one was made later, and Rogers is really stiff in it.

Wasn't Rogers a last-minute sub for Judy Garland in the Barkleys one? I seem to recall reading that somewhere.

I think I'll tape Roberta (which I vaguely recall [info]jonquil recommending recently) and get Swing Time from Netflix.

Roberta is sort of weird--not quite as entertaining as some, but the whole fashion show thing has as chorus girls a bunch of women who later became quite famous. As I recall, Lucille Ball is one.

My favorite musicals from the Thirties are Gold-diggers of 1933, Dames, and 42nd Street.

The first two appear not to be on DVD, alas, (or at least Netflix hasn't got them), but I've got 42nd Street on the list - I've been thinking for ages that I should watch it. Thanks!
